Fourteenth Annual UK Performance Engineering Workshop ( UK PEW 1998 ) The University of Edinburgh 9th and 10th July 1998 AIMS AND SCOPE: UK PEW is the leading UK forum for the presentation of all aspects of the performance modelling and analysis of computer and telecommunication systems. Original papers are invited on all relevant topics but papers on or related to the subjects listed below are particularly welcome. o Stochastic modelling of computer systems and networks. o Solution techniques for large Markov process models. o Tools for all aspects of performance engineering from workload characterisation to operational analysis. o Formal notations for performance modelling. o Performance-oriented design methods. o Modelling paradigms including, but not limited to, Stochastic Petri Nets, Stochastic Process Algebra and Queueing Theory. o Novel techniques in computer system simulation. o Case studies and industrial reports. o Experience and evaluation of existing tools and techniques. WORKSHOP FORMAT: This workshop is the primary event at which the UK performance community can get together to present and discuss their work. Whilst primarilly aimed at UK based performance engineers, we also welcome contributions from researchers working in other countries and those whose interest in performance is derived from experience in other fields. It provides an ideal opportunity for academics, industrialists and PhD students to relate experience and to present both finished work and work in progress. The atmosphere is informal and friendly. As well as the sessions representing the papers submitted it will also be possible to organise a session of short presentations of work in progress; similarly we may also be able to organise tool demonstrations. Please contact a member of the organising committee with your requirements. This year there will be an invited presentation by Professor Isi Mitrani of the University of Newcastle. The workshop will start late in the morning of Thursday 9th July and finish mid-afternoon on Friday 10th July; there will be a workshop dinner on Thursday night. The workshop will take place in the Michael Swann Building on the University's Kings Building Campus. INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS: Papers will be accepted on the basis of an extended abstract or draft paper which should be submitted to Nigel Thomas (nat@dcs.ed.ac.uk) no later than 1st May 1998. Electronic submission is preferred. Notification of acceptance will be given by 25th May together with instructions for the preparation of camera-ready copy. The presented papers will be published in proceedings, which will be available at the workshop for all delegates. In order for the proceedings to be ready in time the deadline for the acceptance of complete papers complying with the camera-copy instructions will be 22nd June. IMPORTANT DATES: o Deadline for extended abstracts: 1st May o Notification of acceptance: 25th May o Camera-ready copy deadline: 22nd June ORGANISING COMMITTEE: Stephen Gilmore, Jane Hillston, Rob Pooley and Nigel Thomas. { stg, jeh, rjp, nat } @ dcs.ed.ac.uk Department of Computer Science, University of Edinburgh, Kings Buildings, Edinburgh EH9 3JZ.
