Computing Support Officer

Applications are invited for the post of Computing Support Officer in the Division of Informatics at Kings' Buildings, to provide a first point of contact for user queries, and administrative support for the team of computing officers.

The successful candidate will work in the user support office, responding to enquiries, in person, and by electronic mail or telephone. Administrative duties will include areas such as maintenance of user accounts, and hardware and software inventories.

The successful candidate is likely to have some computing experience and be educated to HND level. However, other qualities are also important, such such the ability to communicate with users, and a willingness to take responsibility for the maintenance of accurate records.

Salary Scale:(CD1)£10,583 - £12,525

Placement will be made according to age and experience. The appointment will be for three years in the first instance.

FURTHER PARTICULARS The Informatics Divison has a team of about 10 Computing Officers (COs) at the King's Buildins site who develop and manage the local computing facilities. These COs are supported by 3 Computing Support Officers (CSOs) who provide front-line user-support and assist with system management. One of these three posts includes a particular responsibility for the administrative support of the CO/CSO team, and this post is currently vacant.

The computing facilities at this site include over 300 machines, largely consisting of Sun workstations running Solaris, or PC hardware running Linux. There are also significant numbers of Windows NT machines and Apple Macintoshes. This network is generally regarded as state-of-the-art and CO staff are active in research and development of systems administration.

The successful candidate will be based in the user support office, providing a first point of contact for staff and students, as well as maintaining records and other administrative duties.

CSOs report directly to a senior Computing Officer, and backup, training and support will be provided by the existing members of the team.

Duties will include: * Responding to the automated fault-reporting system, dealing with reported problems or passing them on to appropriate staff. * Providing advice and assistance to staff and students. * Managing user accounts for computer systems, photocopying and security systems. * Administration of maintenance contracts, inventory and statistical information. * Maintaining documentation, including paper and electronic copies, and administering loans from a small collection of books. * Other administrative duties, as required by the CO/CSO team. * Other technical duties, possibly including system backups and "postmaster" for the electronic mail system.
