Longrow

Age Distilled 1973. Bottling date unknown
Tasting date 8/10/88
Comments This malt was actually distilled at Springbank distillery in 1973, and called Longrow, although Longrow distillery closed much earlier this century. The malt is, therefore, actually Springbank malt. It differs from Springbank in that the germinated malt is dried completely over a peat fire, instead of partly over peat and partly with hot air from a coal fire. When Longrow distillery was distilling, it did not use this method of drying, but used both peat and coal-fired hot air for drying the germinated malt (Barnard). It is assumed that this malt is triple distilled the same as Springbank.
Members' comments "A very interesting and different malt, but I do not think it is a malt you could drink over a sustained period", "An unusual malt with a distinctive peaty flavour unlike all other well- peated malts", "A pleasant drink, but the alcohol is a bit high and obvious", "An interesting contrast to other peaty malts. The peat is not predominant on the nose, but comes across strongly on the palate, but not at all harsh", "This malt, while very different, comes across as a well balanced peatier style of whisky", "Lovely, peaty, malty, lasting whisky. However, the colour is disappointing".
