Malt Mill

No: 132
Operating Status: long since closed

Location: Islay
Mentioned by Marshall Robb, 1951.

Gleaned from the Malts mailing list:

Malt Mill (a distillery within the the Lagavulin complex in operation to 1960 if you did not know). [ub 126/4.98]

It was situated on the premises of Lagavulin and defunct 1990. Some parts from the production line are today incorporated into the Lagavulin line.

You can read more about it in Jim Murrays 'Complete Book of Whisky' (p 84). I find this author a bit better updated and informed than Michael Jackson. Then, off course, there is the compulsory brickstone 'The Scotch Whisky Industry Record' (circa £80-100). Over my active years (started 1970), as a single malt fanatic, I have only seen one bottle of Malt Mill and it was a standard laboratory bottle with a handwritten label. The bottle was found on the attic at the home of a retired exiceman from Lagavulin. I was offered a part of circa 4cl for the handsome price of £500. As the origin was a bit dubious (handwritten label and plastic reusable screw cap) I rejected the offer. This is of course the most rarest post WW II Islay whiskies. [ub 127/4.98]

There are a few lines about the distillery in "Distilleries lost", I think. [ag 127/4.98]

.. And also in Neil Wilson's "Scotch and Water" [ak 127/4.98]
