The distillery lies between the river Findhorn and the Moray Firth, at Cawdor, not far from Nairn. It was founded in 1812 and permitted to style itself Royal Brackla in 1835 because King William IV enjoyed the whisky. Royal Brackla was rebuilt in 1898 and again in 1966, and extended in 1970. It closed in 1985 but reopened in 1991.
