PublicReengineering Wiki

The authors report on the use of the ISEE tool from Westmount (an I-CASE tool) in the reengineering of a legacy MIS mainframe system for Rhone-Poulenc Rorer. Although they do not report on the implementation of their target architecture, they provide a case study of the modelling of the current and target system. The target aims to separate function from the data so that the data can reduced to a data warehouse. They found that ISEE was the best of 3 tools they assessed, although it didn't fully exhibit all the attributes they required. The first step was to model the existing system using the ISEE tool. They exported the structure of the existing SQL system into ISEE and defined data flows and entity relationships from that. They then re-used this model in deriving the revised target architecture. They found the tool lacking in a number of areas: the database reengineering functionality was not powerful enough; they would have liked to included precedence relationships in the data flows not strict sequential flows; the needed the automatic detection of common entity relationships to aid simplify the target; they would have liked interactive data repository queries to identify dependencies.
