Context
A geographicaly and culturally diverse organisation is attempting to implement standard policies and procedures.
Forces
- Standardisation affords interoperability, economies of scale, measurement and control. However, these benefits can become liabilities, or simply inapplicable, at the local level.
Problem
How can the benefits of a global procedure be realised without compromising local relevance?
Solution
Standardise the generic issues and make local management responsible for identifying and implementing a compatible variant specific to local culture, resources and anomalies.
Consequences
Management have a better understanding of the operational context, whilst local users have a functional variant of the procedures. There is a reduction in non-compliance or unofficial departure from standard procedures.
Downsides??
Known Uses
Health and Saftey procedures at Praxima
Marketing
KM in oil and gas
ERP in engineering services for oil industry
Transport procedures in Retailing (Parcels on a bike)
