How to Reach the University of York

Maps

A number of maps showing the University Campus and the city of York are available.

By Rail

York is on the East Coast mainline. It takes less than two hours to get to York from London Kings Cross station. Trains go every half an hour with at least 25 direct trains each weekday. Direct rail services also run from York to many of the UK's main regional centres. York can be reached the same morning from all the following centres: London (Kings Cross), Edinburgh, Glasgow, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Liverpool. There is a direct rail-link to and from Manchester International Airport and trains go every hour during the day.

By Taxi

A journey by taxi from the railway station to the University will take approximately 15 minutes and cost approximately £4.00. You should ask to be taken to Wentworth College (see accommodation) if arriving in the evening, or the Exhibition Centre (next to the Physics and Electronics Department) if coming directly to the Conference (see the campus map).

By Bus

The buses from York to the University are the Nos. 4 and 5 from the railway station. You should get off the bus at the top of University Road near IRISS (see enclosed map) if wish to go to Wentworth College or just after the first bridge, on University Road, if you wish to go to the Exhibition Centre . The scheduled journey time from the railway station to these stops is approximately 20 minutes.

By Air

Manchester International Airport is approximately two hours drive from York. It handles direct flights from hundreds of international destinations. It also has a frequent and direct rail link to York.

How to get to York from Manchester International Airport by car:
Take the M62 Motorway towards Leeds. Outside Leeds follow the signs for the A64 road to York.

Leeds/Bradford International Airport is 45 minutes drive from York. It handles direct flights from a wide variety of destinations and offers a 50-minute shuttle service to London's Heathrow Airport.

How to get to York from Leeds/Bradford International Airport by car:
The airport is situated off the A658 road. Follow the A658 road to Horsforth. Pick up the A6120 road at Horsforth and follow signs for the A64 York road.

By Car

Visitors approaching York from the A64 should turn off at one of the exits marked University, in order to avoid the City centre. Subsequent turns are also signposted.

Visitors coming from other directions should take either the Selby Road (A19) to Fulford and turn along Heslington Lane to Heslington Hall, or the Hull Road (A1079) and turn right at the first traffic lights into Green Dykes Lane which leads to University Road (see the map).

Venue

Registration, tutorials, conference and exhibition will take place in the Exhibition Centre, next to the Department of Physics & Electronics, University of York - see the campus map.

Accommodation

On arrival you will be allocated accommodation, from Wentworth College, in the one of the following colleges:

NB. Delegates who have booked accommodation for the night of Wednesday 10th September will be required to move to Alcuin College on the morning of 10th September.

On Arrival

All keys and accommodation information will be available from the Porters' Lodge in Wentworth College - see the campus map. The Porter will inform you of the location of your accommodation and provide you with a key. Bedrooms may not be available until 12 noon. Luggage may remain in cars or be stored adjacent to the Porters' Lodge.

The Porters are on duty 24 hours a day.

On Departure

Accommodation must be vacated and the keys returned to the Porters' Lodge in Wentworth College no later than 9.30am on the day of departure. Luggage may be stored in cars or adjacent to the Porters' Lodge.

EMERGENCY telephone messages ONLY (24 hour service) may be channelled through the Wentworth College Porters' Lodge on +44 (0) 1904 433000.

Parking

Attendees wiull be provided with a car parking parmit. The University car parks are marked on the campus map.
Wentworth College ResidentsUse car parks PE or PF.
James College Residents Use car parks PF or PG
Alcuin College Residents Use car park adjacent to the college.
Day Delegates Use car parks PE or PF
Exhibitors may unload and reload their vehicles on the cobbled area outside the main entrance of the Exhibition Centre (marked 'E' on the enclosed map) but must then park in car park PF.

Tutorials

The running of the tutorials will depend on having sufficient participants. Should the tutorials go ahead, they are scheduled to take place on Sunday 7th September from 2:00pm-5:00pm.

Catering

All meals are to be taken in Wentworth College.

Breakfast - 7.45am - 8.45am daily, Sunday 7th September-Thursday 11th September.

Lunch - Lunch will be available for those attending tutorials on Sunday 7th September from 12.00pm - 1:00pm. Lunch times for the duration of the conference will be confirmed in the Final Programme.

Dinner - Sunday 7th September only.

Evening of Monday 8th September - Civic Reception. Residents to make own arrangements for dinner following the Civic Reception.

Evening of Tuesday 9th September - Conference Dinner at York Railway Museum.

Bar service available in Wentworth College on evening of Sunday 7th September only.

Registration

Registration will take place in the Exhibition Centre, as follows:

Sunday 7th September:12:00 noon - 2:00pm
5:00pm - 7:00pm
Monday 8th September:8:00am - 9:00am
At registration a delegate badge and conference pack will be provided.

Photocopying and Fax Facilities

Photocopying and fax facilities will be available (cash payment required) in the Conference Support Office located on the ground floor of the Exhibition Centre. This will be staffed between 8:00am - 6:00pm (weekdays) and 8:30am - 5:30 (weekends). The fax telephone number is +44 (0)1904 434434. Faxes should indicate the recipient's name, the title SAFECOMP'97 and the date.
