MSc in Computer Science, Theory Theme 1994-1997: Pembroke College, Oxford. BA in Mathematics and Computation, 2:i 1992-1994: Hills Rd College, Cambridge. A-levels in Mathematics, Physics, Further Maths and Ancient History 1987-1992: Parkside Community College, Cambridge. 8 GCSEs including: Maths, English, Classics and Expressive Arts. 1991 : Anglia Polytechnic, Cambridge. A-level in Computation. Relevant Experience o For my MSc project I used the theory of proofs as programs to alter an existing proof planner to synthesize Prolog programs from their specification. The project involved developing the type theory used to produce efficient programs which termiate. I received a distinction class grade for this project. o In the summer of 1997, I worked as a programmer for the Human Genome Project at the Sanger Centre in Cambridge. Working directly for the head of the Bioinformatics (Computing) Department, I wrote a probabilistic parser to find genes in strings of DNA. There is no one accepted model for gene finding so the parser ran from a small language in which the scientists could define the models they wished to use or test out. It is the first gene finder to have this feature. o For my undergraduate project I wrote a non-deterministic functional language. This language was similar to Gofer or Miranda but with non-deterministic choice and union operators and totally unrestricted pattern matching. It was very descriptive and easy to use, combining the best points of both languages. I received a 1st class grade for this project. Positions of responsibility: 1996 to 1997: Oxford University, Chairman of the Mathematics Undergraduate Representative Council: Involved speaking on behalf of maths students on the University Maths Governing Body and starting a highly successful second hand maths book shop. Summer 1995: Life Guard and Rescue Diver for Oxford's rowing week (I hold the BSAC SportsDiver Award). June 1996 to August 1996: Christ Church College Summer School: Dean on one of the Oxford Summer Schools. Acted as organiser of and intermediary between the tutors, college staff and about 150 students. January 1992 to August 1994: Oxfam, Cambridge, Part time: Including helping to set up a computer system and doing the accounts, stock taking and working on the shop floor. Skills: o I can program in a clear and structured way in several languages including Java, C, C++, Prolog, ML, Gofer and BASIC. I can use all major operating systems including UNIX, Windows95, DOS and Mac OS7. o I am familiar with most major word processing packages including Word and LATEX. I have a lot of experience using the Internet and creating World Wide Web pages. o I have good communication and interpersonal skills. I have experience chairing and speaking at meetings Personal statement: I have many interests outside work such as scuba diving and skiing, I have (voluntarily) taught beginners in both sports. In my vacations I like to travel. I have been to most European countries including two month long, trips, one through Italy and Greece and the other to Spain and North Africa. Another interest of mine is Ancient History, reading the literature myths and history of Ancient Greece and Rome.
