Creative WebCam Documentation

Introduction

The Creative WebCam provided is a digital camera that plugs into either of the two USB ports on your Linux PC. It has a resolution of 640 by 480 pixels.

Checking the camera

Connect the camera to either of the USB ports at the back of the PC; it should be obvious which ones they are. The PC should not need to be rebooted.

Use the /usr/X11R6/bin/xawtv program to check that the camera is functioning correctly.

If the camera doesn't appear to be working correctly, try reloading the Linux USB kernel modules by invoking the two following lines in succession :-

/usr/sbin/om localhost.hardware rmmod

/usr/sbin/om localhost.hardware insmod

Programming

Programs grab images from the WebCam using the video4linux API. This is documented here.

Another good source of information is the Video for Linux resources page.
