CS1 Environment: E-Mail


The KDE mailer is Kmail, to start Kmail click on the orange 'E' on the desktop panel.

Mail Reader Window

When you start Kmail a window called the Mail Reader window appears. It is divided into three sections:

  • Folders Pane (top left pane)

  • Headers Pane (top right pane)

  • Message Pane (lower pane)

    The Folders Pane contains your message folders. Clicking on one of these folders will open the folder and display the messages contained in it in the Headers Pane.

    The Headers Pane lists all the header information such as the date the message was sent, the sender and subject and the message status flags. Clicking on a message in the Headers Pane will display the message in the Message Pane.

    The Message Pane wiil display the header and body of the current selected message.

    Status Flags

    Status flags for messages can be altered by selecting Message | Set Status from the menu at the top of the window. The status flags are:

  • New message (red dot, message coloured red)
  • Unread message (green dot, message coloured blue)
  • Read (dash)
  • Replied (blue u-turn arrown)
  • Queued (envelope)
  • Sent (angled envelope)

    Sending Mail

    Mail is composed in the Composer Window. This can be selected from the File | New Composer menu or from the blank document icon on the button bar at the top of the window. When you have completed your message press the envelope icon to send your mail.

    Attachments

    Files can be attached to your mail message by:

  • Push the paper clip button and select the file you wish to attach
  • Drag a file from the desktop or another directory into the Composer window
  • Selecting one of the options in the Attach menu

    Address Book

    Commonly used email addresses can be stored in the address book. To view the contents of the address book select File | Addressbook or select the Addressbook icon from the buttons at the top of the window. To select an address in the Composer Window, select the Addressbook button (three dots).

    To add an address to the Addressbook either:

  • type the email address in the lower panel of the Addressbook Manager and then click the add button
  • right click an email address in the To or From fields of the Mail Reader window and select Add to Addressbook.

    To remove an address select it from the list in the Addressbook Manager and click Remove.

    Message Folders

    When Kmail is first started the default folders created are:

  • inbox, where new messages are put
  • outbox, holds messages waiting to be delivered
  • sent-mail, holds copies of all the messages you have sent
  • trash, contains all the messages you have deleted

    More folders can be added to help organise your email messages.

    To create a new folder select Folder | Create and enter the name of your new folder.

    To make changes to a folder select Folder | Modify.

    Messages can be moved from one folder to another by dragging a message in the Headers Pane onto a Folder in the Folders Pane. This can also be carried out by selecting Message | Move or by selecting the message you wish to move and pressing the M key.

    To empty a folder of all its messages, select the folder then Folder | Empty. This will move all the messages into the trash folder or if you are emptying the trash folder all the messages will be permanently deleted.
