Comments: Shukokai is an excellent starting point in the world of martial arts- I am a firm believer in the so-called 'soft-style' martial arts. However, I believe less emphasis should be made on sticking to one particular style. Sure, learn how to kick and punch with shukokai, but don't stop there- try as many different styles as possible, take what you need, what works for you, from each, and you will come up with something which is unique. If the Okinawan's had the same attitude as a lot of karateka have today, they would never have come up with what we call karate- they would have had an outdated, useless fighting system. For example, take Jeet Kune Do, this a 'system' with no set moves and no set style, the emphasis more on fighting than performing a kata, or unrealistic sparring. Hence JKD is more a way of thinking than a style. I am not saying rush out and join a JKD club, as these tend to be false, not living up to the original ideal, but be open-minded and willing to use what works for you, not some 8th Dan Karateka, expecting you to follow his movements exactly- this is impractical and unrealistic, due to different builds, attitudes. What works for him will not work for you in the same way it works for him. That is fact. Don't be taken in by words such as- if you train hard, you will be able to do the same as me in a few years time. You need to be able to defend yourself now, not when you're some geriatric who can hardly move.
