Comments: HI. Emma here. I'm 15 and I have been doing Shukokai Karate for about a year and at present I am a yellow belt - Hoping that by the age of 20 or earlier I will be a black belt. I thought your website was really cool and I hope that one day I will be able to produce a website as good as this - but with the help of my trusted Karate Instructor , Mark Sutton. Even though I have only been doing Karate for a year , It is the best thing I have ever done in my whole life. I train twice a week on mondays and wednesdays in the evening at my school , and I always look forward to every lesson. You see, karate has let me do things I never thought that I would be able to do. When I was born, I had a dislocated right hip. Doctors told my mom that I would never walk. But I prove them wrong. Comments: I was a member of the Bulawayo club where I trained for 2 years with Sensi Johnny Robinson, and was lucky enough on occasion to train with some of the South African instructors like Sensi Lionell, Sensi Danie, Sensi Piet and their teams. Since comming to London and travelling I have found it very difficult to keep up with training, although I did start attending Sensi Archie Grassoms club in Maidstone, but with often being away and/or working I found it impossible to continue. This is a geat find (don't know why I did not think of looking before) as I can now keep myself up to date and judging by the lack of entries from other Zimbabweans I shall let them know about this site too as I am sure they will be interested.

Comments: I am 3rd kyu brown belt and I train 4 times a week at the Honbu Dojo in Claremont, Cape Town. My senseis are Mark Kosmas and Shihan Chris Thompson. I have made amazing friends while training there and it certainly is the most incredible sport ever. I am very lucky to have such patient and friendly instuctors. They have helped me immensely throughout my training. Presently, I am working towards the World Champs in Berlin in May next year. That should be quite an experience!!! Comments: The following introduction is to a book I've written that I hope you will consider worthy. Do you ever find yourself wondering how you can improve your Dojo? Wondering if there isn't something new you can share with your students? Or do you find yourself asking if there is anything new for you to learn to improve your own skills? I believe I have the answer to all these questions. If I may take a minute of your time. I'd like to share my excitement over a newly released book The Warrior as Healer that has been published by Inner Traditions International. Although I must admit that my enthusiasm is partly due to the fact that I have the distinct privilege of being the book's author. For the most part writing this book has given me the opportunity to give something back to martial arts, a sport that has given so much to me. For a number of years I have been bothered by what I considered the degradation of martial arts. I am convinced that this persistent erosion of standards has been caused to some degree by a disregard for some of the martial art's core values -- along with the discontinuance of traditional alliances with the healing arts -- namely herbology. As you know, traditional Chinese martial arts training placed as much emphasis on nurturing the spirit as it did on the fighting ability of the aspiring martial arts student. This extended to the study of the healing arts and the use of herbs not only for injury management, but also to increase sensitivity, improve energy levels, and, most significantly, raise consciousness. Many of the greatest figures in martial arts history were as renowned as healers as they were as warriors. Leaving behind a history of extensive healing tradition that includes an immense repository of herbal formulas. Warrior as Healer provides the recipes for the formulas that have been used for centuries to stop bleeding, speed the healing of fractured bones, and increase vitality as well as those that increase one's ability to focus and calm the mind or spirit. In addition to reexamining the historical relationship between the martial and healing arts Warrior as Healer also discusses how modern martial artist can incorporate the use of herbs as part of their martial art training, to improve stamina, condition their hands and feet, and to maintain their general health. The book is almost 200 pages in length, it is user-friendly, filled with easy to understand instructions. The main topics discussed are: - A brief discussion on the historical relationship between the healing and martial arts. - Step-by-step instructions on the methods used to prepare herbs (decoction or tea, medicinal wines, pills and capsules). - Injury management formulas -- including: herbs that stop bleeding, herbs that heal broken and fractured bones, herbs that heal strained and torn ligaments, herbal oils liniments and salves, herbal massage oils, and herbs that restore consciousness after a knockout. - Training formulas -- including: tonics used for strengthening the body and increase stamina, medicinal wines that strengthen the body and increase stamina, seasonal wines used in spring and winter months, Chinese herbal liniments used for hand conditioning, and a brief discussion on how to use Ginseng. - Herbs for the Taoist practice of sexual conservation. - Herbs used in meditation for quieting the senses. - Sources for the purchase of all the formulas mentioned in this book. I have written this book in an effort to share with fellow martial artists what the ancients had realized, that beyond the obvious benefits of using herbs to improve health, increase energy levels and manage injuries, integrating the study of healing arts with martial arts practice offered other, more subtle benefits such as an increased sensitivity to pain and suffering that seems to be inherent in healers and the healing arts, and a raising of consciousness that can contribute to heightened spiritual development. What appears to happen as a result of integrating these ancient arts can best be described as a refining of temperament and a harnessing of the aggressive tendencies that are sometimes accentuated through martial arts practice. Perhaps the powerful way that this integrated study can mitigate an individuals violent or aggressive tendencies occurs because, philosophically, such study is a manifestation of the yin-yang theory of opposites in balance - in which the yin (soft or healing arts) blends with the yang (hard or martial arts). On a spiritual level, 20 years of studying these 2 ancient arts, combined with daily meditation, has convinced me that such study does indeed harmonize the emotions and provide a kind of reverence for life that is essential to anyone learning the skills of unarmed combat, which ultimately confers the ability to seriously injure or kill another human being. On a practical level, I attribute my overall good health and lack of any permanent injuries to the effectiveness of Chinese herbs, which I have used throughout my many years of training. Therefore, I encourage all martial artist who are interested in experiencing firsthand the wisdom embodied in the traditional approach to martial arts training to consider purchasing this book. I believe it will open your eyes to a whole new approach to your practice. I'd like to conclude with an excerpt from "Chinese Goju Virtues." Conceived by Shidoshi Ron Van Clief, Grandmaster of the Chinese Goju System, "Chinese Goju Virtues" serve as a guide or frame of reference to govern the moral character of everyone who studies the Chinese Goju style. I have always been inspired by them and have attempted to apply these principles whenever it has been necessary to use my martial skills. Comments: I was just revisiting my past. I was a member of your club in 1989 during my final year at university. I only managed the first two belts but managed to win a couple of matches at the Scottish University Championship lower belts division. I really enjoyed my time at the club and have never been fitter. At the time we were taught by Jimmy, I never did know his last name. Comments: As a former student of Shukokai - who is looking to restart training after A-levels and injury permitting - I really appreciate this site. I trained under the former Scottish international Sensei Archie Grassom (3rd Dan) and had the fortune to attend regular training seminars with Sensei Eddie Daniels (6th Dan, UK SKF Chief Instructor). It was also my fortune to attend the late Sensei Kimura's (8th Dan, SKF World Chief Instructor)late UK training course. He gave me my very first kyu grade, and even though we met only briefly, his teachings stay with me now. It would be nice to see a bit more about this magnanamous, skilled and wise teacher on this site. I shall never forget his strict yet well-humoured lessons, and still cannot believe the extent of his achievments and vision. Once again, a very nice site - hopefully the first of many dedicated to Shukokai.

Comments: I am in my 2nd year of training in Shukokai. Previously trained in both Gojo-ryu and Wado-ryu. I find Kimura shukokai to be a refreshing and flowing style. My sensei is is Raj Sheth who trained in Bolton before coming to Canada. I also had the pleasure and the honour of meeting and training with Shihan Eddie Daniels on his visit to Canada last year. Comments: This is the first web site that I have visited and I must say that I am well impressed . I started to learn Shukokai at the tender age of seventeen way back in 1969 . I got Shodan in 1976 and Nidan in 1978 . Both dan grades were under Sensie Kimura . Here in South Africa I train under Shihan Chris Thompson And sensei Mymoena Toffa and both instructors think my kata needs work. The recen world champs were held in South Africa and alot of overseas instructors visited Samurai Honbu dojo in Cape Town. Comments: Nice web site. I hope your standards in the dojo are as good! It is nice to see an enthusiastic organization for once, unlike the ones I have been unfortunate enough to belong to over the past 15 years or so (no names mentioned to protect the incompetent). Less said, the better. Anyway, the best thing I did to improve my Shukokai was to take up other martial arts, Thai-boxing etc. The definitve thing was to study JKD (There is a world class instructor in Edinburgh) which complements Shukokai as we tend to have an open mind. When you persevere and if your ego allows it, you will soon realize how little you in fact know about martial arts. Keep up the good work. C. Richmond (Retired due to illness).

Comments: Welcome to all Shukokai karateka, I was a student of Sensei Kimura for over ten years untill his untimely death on july 7, 1995.Sensei left a indelible mark on my life as well as thousands of other students throughout the United states and around the world.I recall distinctly the experience i had traveled to England with Sensei and a team of ten of his students from the states.I was testing for my black belt and i recall kimura stated that "you all failed,i will give you 15 minutes to correct your mistakes.That was so typical of sensei he would always squeeze out whatever you had and commanded respect from all who had the pleasure of meeting him.I strongly beleive that this web site helps to promote Shukokai and the man whom we all loved and respected.In conclusion, sensei once stated "practice does not make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect", I live by these words everyday of my life.
