The first Scottish distillery to be wholly-owned by a Japanese company. A second Japanese company subsequently acquired Ben Nevis and others have share-holdings in Scottish whisky companies.

Tomatin was established in 1897 but saw its great years of expansion between the 1950s and 1970s. During this period it became the biggest malt distillery in Scotland and one of the largest in the world. It is just a little smaller than Suntory's Hakushu distillery.

As a very large distillery, Tomatin produced a malt as a filler for countless blends during the boom years.
