The distillery, near Alness was founded in 1817, grew very quickly and was extened in 1899. In 1970 a new stillhouse was constructed. With its six stills visible from the road it looks a very modern establishment. It closed in the mid 1980s but reopened in 1991 and there may be future official bottlings.

tastings

26 yr old, 92 proof
Sweet and smokey at the same time. Best diluted a bit (indecipherable notes -- perhaps too late in the evening to be trusted fully?) [lh]

SMWS bottling 59.2 Teaninich.
Said to come from an amontillado sherry cask, but there was a definite hint of salt, so I wonder whether it was a manzanilla cask. 12 years old and 115.7%! To be treated with great care, and a lot of water, but had a pleasant citrusy flavour at the end. [rb]
