Some ISP details

Name of ISP:

  1. Backbone provider:

Server:
    • Server software:
    • Version:
  1. HTTP 1.1 supported?
  2. Directory configuration control, e.g. (htaccess,etc)?:
What is under our control and how?
  3. User Authentication methods, (prefer DB based):
(e.g. for an Apache server, mod_auth_mysql is available, as is the AuthAuthoritative directive)

  4. Scripting, etc.
    • Is SSI available? XSSI (SSI with conditionals)?
What are the local limitations (e.g. no exec includes, or whatever)?
    • PHP/FI ?
    • Are CGIs allowed? What conditions, etc.
    • Is FastCGI supported?
    • Is access given to any server API, e.g. NSAPI or even Apache Perl module?
Any problems with operation of these facilities? (Please don't just say no --- the problem won't necessarily affect us!)
  5. Cookies --- what facilities provided by server? Can the sever Authenticate users using cookies (with sufficient kicking from me)?

Logs:
    Logs:
  1. Are they user configurable?
  2. Are logs collected per user? Can we read them immediately or do you have to process them first?
  3. Error logs --- Ditto?
  4. Are logs private and secure, or are they group/world readable?

Documentation and Information:
  1. What documentation is available for your set-up?
  2. How can I find out more about yopur configuration (e.g. is all this info readily available somewhere?)?
  3. Where is the info?
  4. Can I look at it?
  5. Do you have newsgroups / mailing lists for your clients, and can I read them?

Services:
  1. Can we serve documents via FTP as well as HTTP?
  2. Do you have an NNTP server, and can we run newsgroups on it?

Security:
  1. Are our documents open to everybody on your server or not? i.e. it is common for the server to use group access to read pages. We can almost certainly live with whatever situation is present, but we need to know.
  2. Are CGIs run with the uid of their owner (and if not, why not)? We might, for instance, wish to collect data from browser without having to mail it to ourselves.
  3. Do or could you offer SSL on our account? Note that we would NOT require a high level of security (i.e. computationally intensive crypto-suite) at this stage, but some minimal level of encryption could be extremely useful. We're talking about transfer of confidential, but not especially sensitve information and user confidence, rather than strong crypto here.
  4. Are Logs adequately protected?

Mail:
  1. What facilities are offered?
  2. Does mail to our domain go to separate accounts / files?
  3. Can procmail (or an equivalent) be run at your site?

Access:
  1. Presumably we can ftp files to your servers.
  2. We need to login to manage site. Can we use:
    • telnet
    • rlogin
    • ssh or kerberos
    • whatever else, e.g. X session?
  3. Other ways to access files, e.g. NFS or whatever? From PCs? Macs?

Cover and Service:
  1. 24 x 7 cover?
  2. Do you have availability records? Can I see them?
  3. Service level agreement?

Performance:
  1. LINX connection --- tell me about it.
  2. Cross network speed ?

Charges:
(for basic facilities, and for anything else we've mentioned if it's extra)
  1. Set up:
  2. Annual charge (we already have domain names).
  3. Traffic and tariff:
    • Limits?
    • Charges for exceeding these, e.g. per Gb per month. etc.
  4. Storage:
    • Limits?
    • 100Mb?
    • Extra 100Mb?

Test Logins:
How soon can I try out your system?
