My Impressions

What I found most striking was the fact that given the fact that most people there were teachers/lecturers, is that little attention was given to any sort of scientific approach to the utilisation of of this new technology as a teaching/learning medium and its impact/influence on the learning process.

Very little was talked about evaluation procedures and no attempt of creating some sort of operational model to teach/learn on the Web. Most of the success or lack of it was described by satisfaction level of students or number of students that used it.

Here I go back to the main obstacle I have found in my research, this awfully long word, inter-disciplinary nature of the Web. Some of the discussions people were having were quite basic for someone with a CS backgrounds. Researchers were rediscovering the wheel when talking about the Web, example included, referring to basic HCI guidelines as if they were new findings. It really makes you think if we are doing this the right way. Is it Globalisation a good enough argument supporting the adoption of the Web as a teaching/learning medium ? Should we look for specific applications ? I don't think so, after all, the WWW was created to support collaboration and sharing of information across the world , and so far, there is no better way of accomplishing this other than through the WWW, but in my humble opinion, we need a proper model for inter-disciplinary research.
