Let us assume, for the sake of this assignment, that
a new computer system is being designed. This system
comprises a new hardware design and a new optimizing
compiler, designed specifically for this machine.
A number of key decisions have already been taken,
and a number of hardware parameters have been fixed.
These will be revealed at various points during the
course of the assignment. However, some parameters
remain as yet undefined, and it is these that we
will be concentrating on during this assignment.
One of the most important parameters of a computing
system is the type applications the system is
expected to execute efficiently. For our hypothetical
system we shall assume that the target application
classes have already been identified, and are those listed
in table 2 below.
